NEXT TO NORMAL

How can we as theatremakers acknowledge and process the problematic elements of theatre we love and which speaks to us, while exploring and holding the poignant, beautiful, and important elements in the light? What does a process of subverting musical theatre traditions? How do performers, designers, and producers develop a shared pedagogy that allows them to make a text their own? This production of Next to Normal was a site-specific workshop focusing on queering and deconstruction of the nuclear family, discussion of mental health, and intentional interrogation of traditions associated with musical theatre and performance.
